A commitment that starts with sourcing decisions
For Iron Steel Pipes, sustainability is a criterion for guiding the selection of materials, manufacturers and partners. Our aim is to help reduce the supply chain’s impact while keeping safety, technical requirements and supply continuity at the centre. Assessing steel with a lower footprint means connecting the material’s origin and characteristics with verifiable environmental data.
API 5L: technical performance and environmental impact
API 5L defines manufacturing, inspection, testing and traceability requirements for line pipe, including through PSL1 and PSL2. The emissions profile is assessed separately using information about the plant, production route, raw materials, energy mix and downstream processing. Blast furnace and basic oxygen furnace, electric arc furnace and direct reduction routes have different profiles: the comparison must concern the product actually being offered.
Different documents answer different questions
- ISO 14001 and ISO 50001 concern environmental and energy management systems respectively. Checking their validity and scope helps assess the organisation or site identified; the impact of an individual pipe requires product-specific data.
- EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2 documents report conformity and inspection results according to the requested type. Heat identification helps link them to the material, but these documents do not measure its carbon footprint.
- EPDs, based on life cycle assessments, require attention to product category rules, declared units, boundaries, reporting period and data representativeness. ISO 14025 and EN 15804, where applicable, are references to check. A reliable comparison requires a consistent basis across the declarations.
- A footprint calculation under ISO 14067 should be read alongside its methodology, boundaries and available verification, distinguishing product data from general industry averages.
Origin and import obligations
To guide sourcing decisions, we look at the manufacturer, production site and available documentation. For imports into the EU, CBAM covers certain goods, including steel categories. Applicability, exemptions and obligations must be checked against customs classification, origin and the operator’s role. This assessment sits alongside the API 5L technical specification and requires dedicated emissions data where applicable.
Logistics and environmental initiatives: measurable objectives
We aim to guide logistics choices towards fewer unnecessary journeys, planned loads and multimodal solutions when suitable for the project. Assessing potential benefits involves comparing distances, transport modes and consistent data for the particular supply. Our commitment includes attention to sustainable investment and green regeneration: any results require specific documentation and remain distinct from the assessment of the supply’s impacts. Any claim of carbon neutrality also requires its own verifiable basis.
Prepare a transparent enquiry
State the API 5L specification, edition, PSL level, grade, dimensions, quantity and destination. Add the required environmental documents and the comparison basis specified by the project. Availability, traceability, additional inspections and manufacturer data must be agreed in the quotation. For Iron Steel Pipes, making the requirements and limitations of documents clear is part of our commitment to a more responsible supply chain.
